The BCPS is looking for a volunteer to become the Society’s bookseller. The job entails holding the stock of books, maintaining the catalogue and making it available to members, dealing with members’ enquiries and handling and keeping accounts of sales. Advice and help will be available, especially in relation to the pricing of new stock and the accounting aspects (on which the bookseller will liaise with the Treasurer). If you are interested in this important role, please get in touch with BCPS Secretary Christopher Jones at cjajones1@yahoo.co.uk

John Beasley has produced a new edition of his 1990 book "Some problems by Auguste d'Orville", and is sending it free of charge to those who have a copy of the first edition. If you have this edition and have not yet received a copy of the new one, please contact him (johnbeasley@mail.com).

ñ Lectures

BCPS lectures are held at the Civil Service Recreation Centre, Chadwick Street, London SW1, normally in the St. James Room on the second floor of the building. Unless stated otherwise lectures begin at 1830. Those attending usually congregate in the bar and restaurant area on the first floor. To reach the Centre, take a bus to Victoria Street or underground to Westminster or St. James's Park and head southwards to Great Peter Street. At the south end of Chadwick Street, which runs at right angles to Great Peter Street, turn left and look for the entrance marked CSRC. New members are always welcome. A map can be seen at: upmystreet.com.

Friday 29th January: David Shire will present some problems by Andrei Lobusov.

Friday 26th February: Michael McDowell will show some entertaining Soviet items from the 1930s. This will be preceded by a meeting of the Committee at 1700.

Friday 28th May: An open evening designed to allow members to show problems and engage in discussion on topical issues.

Lectures Secretary Colin Russ would welcome offers of lectures from BCPS members. Please contact Colin at 30 Welson Road, Folkestone, Kent CT20 2NP.

ñ From the Librarian

Problem collections on cards and as computer databases

There seem as yet to be few if any direct mate databases on computer such as are proving so valuable in the endgame study, helpmate, and retro fields. The Society has several collections of problems on cards whose use will greatly reduce the labour of compiling such databases, and is willing to make them available on long-term loan to anyone who is doing so. They include many problems which appeared in publications now not easily found, they present material in a standard format, and their use will enable database compilers to make very much faster progress than would be possible working direct from the primary sources.

In particular, the Society recently came into possession of ten of the missing boxes of the White-Hume collection. Some of this material is in poor condition, and should be transcribed before it deteriorates further.

The matter has been tabled for discussion at the AGM, and a paper describing the collections in greater detail will be posted on the web site three or four weeks before the meeting.** Any member who would like to make use of them and who will not be at the AGM should contact either the Secretary or the Librarian in advance of the meeting. In the circumstances, consideration will be given to waiving the normal rule that Society property be not taken outside the UK.
