While you are at ECSC 2010 in Sunningdale you can take advantage of its excellent location. The gardens of the hotel are worth exploring, but within a bus or taxi trip there are many outstanding tourism opportunities. The area is full of famous buildings, many with royal connections:
Top of the list is Windsor Castle, weekend home of the British royal family. Claiming to be the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, it is in a dramatic position and has many elegant rooms – Saint George’s Chapel and the State Apartments are particularly fine.
Very near Windsor Castle is Eton College, the most famous school in the UK, whose pupils still dress in traditional clothes and whose buildings date from the 15th century.
There probably won’t be any racing at Ascot Racecourse during ECSC 2010, but the buildings are very impressive. This is the venue for various famous horseracing events (such as Royal Ascot in June).
Windsor Great Park is excellent for walks. It is a large country park, and contains various royal gardens and pavilions.
The towns of Old Windsor and Eton are on opposite sides of the River Thames and a walk around both and alongside the river gives excellent sightseeing. Boat trips on the Thames are also enjoyable.
Going slightly further, to get to the sights of Central London takes about an hour by train from Sunningdale. You arrive at Waterloo Station and from there you can walk to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square.
