The concept of this website occurred to me after several recent conversations with Bill Pettigrew, who has been playing chess in Sheffield for very many years and has lots of memorabilia. It struck me that Bill is probably not the only one who keeps his old bulletins, game scores and even photographs. The intention is to post on this website as much as I can find out about organised chess in Sheffield from its inception to the present day. Of course, such an aim is challenging, but I am sure that a reasonable archive can be built up, particularly covering the last fifty years.

The site will cover the Sheffield and District Chess Association (the ‘Association’) and the Chess Section of the Sheffield and District Works Sports Association (the ‘Works League’) and tournaments played in Sheffield. I am interested in games played in Sheffield and games played outside Sheffield by Sheffield players. Also of interest are results bulletins, press/magazine coverage and photographs. Especially welcome would be any original writing about Sheffield Chess that anybody wants to provide. This could be in the form of personal memories or could be a general (or detailed) article about the history of Sheffield Chess. If you can help with any such materials please contact me at the email address below. All material provided will be scanned and returned to its owner as soon as possible. The source of all material will be acknowledged on the site.

I do have other calls on my time, so I won’t guarantee how often this site will be updated, but I shall probably be stirred into action by incoming material.
