My friend Paul Valois (Leeds) spends much of his time researching chess columns in libraries, including that in Sheffield. He has been kind enough to provide me with a note listing what he has been able to find out about chess columns in and around Sheffield.
I have posted it here and it is viewable from the ‘Sheffield Chess Columns’ item in the Main Menu. I hope that it will prove useful to local chess researchers and even those further afield.
Another recent addition is a group photograph of Bill Pettigrew and friends at the Kasparov-Kramnik World Championship Match. I’ve added it to the end of his 2001 CHESS article.
The following is a list of some of the material waiting to be posted, though I shan’t make any predictions as to when.
- An online version of John Fryer’s 1988 booklet Check! – One Man’s Debt to Chess.
- A game by W C (Colin) Evans against George Koltanowski from a simultaneous display in 1938.
- Some games by a Sheffield player (including a win over a Spanish International!) from the Kent Chess Association congress at Bromley in 1925.
- A fine game by Chris Williams from the 1975 match against Manchester.
