If a4 were guarded and the wPs d4 and d6 were missing, White could mate on those latter squares with the wSf5. In each solution, a black Chinese Piece retreats over a critical square, which the wSc4 then moves to. From here it guards a4 and provides a hurdle over which the Chinese Piece can capture the wP, allowing the wS to mate.
