The key sets up an anti-battery check forcing a self-block, followed by mate. In each variation Black defends by guarding f7 but it has turned out he has been decoyed to the other side of d4 or h6 as appropriate. For instance, if the black PAh3 hadn't moved, 2.LEh6+ VAh4 3.Pag5 would be met by 3...PAxh6.
